Olga Engel
Olga Engel harmoniously mixes luxury with minimalism, functionality and ergonomics with a light mood and a touch of irony.
Olga always takes cues from personal stories, bringing sensitivity and charisma to her works and the space they sit in. Her practice is fuelled by her desire to metamorphose ordinary objects into whimsical design pieces by giving them new,
unexpected functions.
Early in her career, she moved between textile, graphic and packaging design before specialising in multidisciplinary product design. Her education includes study at a textile academy and further design training at the KLC School of
Design in London, where an internship with designer Mark Humphrey was formative for her approach to product-making. Engel’s pieces, often sculptural chairs, lamps and collectable objects, pay particular attention to proportion,
materiality and emotional storytelling; critics and features describe her practice as “designing emotions,” producing objects that are both elegant and quietly humorous. She works between Latvia and France and exhibits with contemporary design galleries and fairs; her work is held in private collections across Europe and the United States.
